Six years of sustainable land transport in the Philippines: GIZ TCC Project Culmination

Makati City, Philippines – On November 28, 2018, the GIZ Project “Energy Efficiency and Climate Change Mitigation in the Land Transport Sector in the ASEAN Region”, also known as the “Transport and Climate Change (TCC)” Project, commemorated six years of its achievements in advancing sustainable land transport in the Philippines. Mr. Friedel Sehlleier, Deputy Director for Sustainable Transport for GIZ ASEAN/Thailand, presented the achievements of the project from 2012 to 2018 which include:

  • 5 national policies/plans improved with technical recommendations
  • 2 studies published to provide policy recommendations
  • 14 national project events conducted with stakeholders
  • 4 national government agencies/ministries supported
  • 3 academic and non-government institutions collaborated with

Mrs. Irina Scheffmann, Country Director of GIZ Philippines, highlighted that the active contribution of project partners, namely, the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Climate Change Commission (CCC), Clean Air Asia (CAA), and the University of the Philippines National Center for Transportation Studies (UP NCTS), resulted in the success of the project. From the side of the Philippine government, Atty. Zona Russet Tamayo, Regional Director for National Capital Region (NCR) of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), was appreciative of the support of GIZ in the transport sector through the years. She expressed hope in the continuation of the partnership and highlighted the government’s commitment to sustaining the project’s efforts in improving policies on energy- efficient transport.

The TCC Project will draw to a close in early 2019 and is now being wrapped up not only in the Philippines but in the other 4 partner countries as well. A Regional Closing Workshop together with all the partners in the ASEAN Region was also held last November 12 in Kuching, Malaysia.
